FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 26, 2012

Contact: Tony Duong, Deputy Director
Asian American Recovery Services, Inc.
(415) 243.4888

New Data on Drug Use Among Asian Americans Living in the San Francisco Bay Area
Asian American Recovery Services, Inc. (AARS) Deputy Director Tony Duong announced today
findings of a recently published peer reviewed article citing differences in drug use patterns among Chinese, Filipino and Vietnamese men who live along the San Francisco Bay Area’s Peninsula.

Daniel Toleran, the lead author, and colleagues found Filipinos reported higher use rates for alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana and crack cocaine in the last 30 days compared to their Chinese and Vietnamese counterparts. The data findings also show Filipino and Vietnamese men who have sex with men (MSM) reported alcohol use to be significantly greater than their Chinese counterpart. Additionally, other tobacco use, believed by the authors to be the use of blunts or marijuana mixed with tobacco was found among study participants who had criminal justice system involvement. Moreover, age group analyses indicated study participants ages 18-25 years used alcohol at a higher rate than other older adults in the study. The article was published in the Journal of Substance Abuse and Ethnicity in their Spring edition released on March 22, 2012.

Jeff Mori, AARS, Inc. Executive Director stated, “study findings confirm the importance of collecting and reporting information by ethnic groups rather than referring to everyone as Asians.” Mr. Toleran, the Project’s Director suggested, if data is collapsed into a general Asian or Asian and Pacific Islander group category, as is often the case in many studies, the unique behaviors of the individual groups are lost.

The study was funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Substance Abuse Prevention as part of its Strategic Prevention Framework initiative. Study participants took part in a 5-week intervention study to mitigate substance abuse, Hepatitis C and HIV among high-risk adults in San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties of California.

“BElieve in YOUrself”
Thursday, May 3, 2012 from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm
San Jose Masonic Center
2500 Masonic Drive
San Jose, CA 95125-2098

Being true to who we are is challenging for many of us. Girls in particular, often face conflicting expectations from their friends, parents, and popular culture about what they are suppose to be. While women have made many strides in recent decades to expand the role of women in the workforce and society, our presence continues to be nearly absent in many industries. The visibility of positive role models for young women, especially women of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) descent, are particularly sparse in popular culture.

Every year the annual SISTER-to-SISTER Leadership Conference works to empower over 300 local young women to be the architects of their own lives. This has proven to be a positive influence on API girls. This year’s conference entitled, BElieve in YOUrself, serves as a reminder to young women to “BE YOU” and believe their happiness and dreams are worth pursuing.

We are asking you to join us in supporting young women to BElieve in YOUrself at the 17th annual SISTER-to-SISTER Leadership Conference. The conference will be held on May 3, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the San Jose Masonic Center. Every year the conference hosts a variety of workshops, activities, and entertainment aimed at helping young API women develop leadership skills and a strong sense of self. Some examples of our workshops are drug and alcohol education and prevention, sexual health education, body image, and healthy relationships. This year we will also have a career panel with API women representing a variety of fields.

Each year SISTER-to-SISTER is covered by local media and has been praised by community and government leaders such as San Jose Council Member Kansen Chu, City of San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed, and the San Jose’s Mayor Gang Prevention Task Force. It’s a perfect opportunity to show your support! Today, you can make an immediate difference in the lives of these young women. Each $50.00 you send will provide one young woman admission to the all-day conference.

AARS relies on community (individual and corporate) sponsorship in order to sustain the conference. We hope you will join us in our mission and we look forward to your forthcoming response. All donations are tax deductible.

Together we can guide our youth to reach their potential.
Thank you in advance for your kind support!
